The Sannyasis and World Conscious Pact : 2/3/13 from India

Dear devotees

Receive my warm greetings from Kumbha Mela. Srila Prabhupada ki jay!

These days we have had nice service visiting many different Acaryas from different sampradayas and akaras, we are bringing the message of environmental protection of the sacred rivers. We had two intense days of outing to visit the camps of the Kumbha Mela with Harinam, with costumes representing Ganga, Mother Earth, deforested areas, multinational materialists and the message of Universal Love.
This caused a very good impact, we were always very well received and all supported the environmental message and felt part of it.

The Kumbha Mela is an impressive gathering of scholars and seekers of spirituality. Sure, there are always some who only seek self-promotion, but overall it has been a very nice experience. These days I was reading a little more about the Kumbha Mela and some authors say they do not know when or how this meeting started, but it notably represents a living tradition. And spirituality should always be a living tradition. Not a tradition where everything is given only by imitation or where followers do not know what it is or where nothing is being practiced.

This is a very special place. We are right in front of where three holy rivers unite: The Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati, this site is called Triveni and there is daily worship here and puja is done. So, we offer our most humble obeisance to that sacred site where we are now, this beautiful Triveni.

I want to deeply thank the devotees who are here in the Kumbha Mela doing tapasya and representing their characters with the beautiful costumes that were made by hand for over a month, working hard to come to Vrindavan to preach here. In the past, the Kumbha Mela has been a site of our acaryas hard preaching ... Srila Prabhupada was in this same Kumbha Mela in Allahabad in the 70s. Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaj established in his math preaching at Kumbha Mela in Haridwar. Thus, the Vaishnavas also have been present in the Kumbha Mela, singing and carrying the holy names of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mercy everywhere. Furthermore, I wanted to share a reflection on a lecture by Srila Prabhupada that I heard this morning:

A sannyasi who had a strong test concerning his vows asked Srila Prabhupada what should a sannyasi do when he falls down from upholding vows. At that point, Srila Prabhupada told him the story of Chotta Haridas, who had to move away from the association of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu for having desires for a mother. Essentially nothing happened, but Mahaprabhu was so strict that He "rejected" his association. Chotta Haridasa felt so desperate, he went to Triveni and drowned there. But Chotta Haridasa was so attached to Mahaprabhu that he appeared again before Him in the form of a gandharva. Thus, this sannyasi, Vishnujan Swami, who was loved by all after hearing that from Srila Prabhupada left his things and disappeared. Days later, some brahmanas found a body around, but never know if it was him or not. Then Srila Prabhupada heard about this and became very sad and he said that was not the point, he would have preferred that he marry and continue to serve in his mission. So Vishnujan Swami was as an example of Prabhupada's followers who wanted to be with him forever and repented  because he was unable to uphold his sannyas. That's why I always tell my sannyasis please be sannyasis or not, the most important thing is to be happy in Krishna Consciousness and keep fighting, because being a sannyasi in Kali Yuga is very difficult. Always move forward, preaching and preaching, fighting and fighting.

The sannyasis always face many obstacles, because they work with young and pretty people, caring for farms, preaching centers and temples. So we pray for our sannyasis, asking so that they may always be steadfast, because they are very supportive in expanding Krishna Consciousness.

Some time ago, there was a sannyasi who did not know what to do with his sannyas position, and neither knew what his problem was. Then I told him to collect $ 10,000 and then once collected by him to think if he wanted to give them to the Mission of Sri Caitanya or use them to start a family. The spiritual process is not about having nothing or not knowing what to do, this path, and especially that of the sannyasi is to serve. This is a beautiful tradition of order and service. Here, in the Kumbha Mela, we have seen many sannyasis, but how many are really strict in their vows in private life? Paramatma only knows, but there are many who want to be sannyasis which is remarkable, here we can see that. A sannyasi is one piece in building a Mission. I am very grateful to all of them. The sannyasis in Venezuela, Ecuador, everywhere, have made many beautiful things. For example our Narayan Maharaj, the loved Damodar Maharaj, our Ashram Maharaj, Tirtha Maharaj, Yajavar Maharaja  as well as our Goswami Maharaj near to Chile, they are all very important. To them we offer our respects, admiration and prayers. In this Kumbha Mela we have found all kinds of things, however, as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, in this age it is our duty to sing, Harinam Yajna, Yuga Dharma. Everyone can chant the holy names and we have seen that even the impersonalists sing the names Govinda and Gopal.

The work we have done during these days will have a major impact in South America. All the preaching we are doing is in conjunction with Ganga Action Parivar and the World Conscious Pact. They have created a very nice basis to work from. The particular quality of the World Conscious Pact is that it is a pact of determination, even to some extent, they are of a positive aggressive nature in terms of what themes they uphold to contribute to, but beyond that aggression is a constant determination to protect the values that are promoted. A love given in defense of nature, animals and humans. That is the great strength of the philosophy that our acaryas have taught us; to do things with love, without being discouraged and without violence. Most importantly, we must be systematic so that things are done right. I wish that you make your best effort in each of your services, trying to be as systematic as possible in everything you do and with the greatest love possible. All my love from the Kumbha Mela. Do not forget to share the nectar of sankirtana in the report pages and  the okis distribution and awareness messages in you areas of service. A big hug, Jay Srila Prabhupada!

Your always well wisher,
Swami B. A. Paramadvaiti.
